Meet the Better Wave than Worry team

The Better Wave than Worry team focuses on early signals, that occur everywhere in society. The team makes a series of videos about its members and their role in the project. Mark Sterken and Frank van Steenbeek are the first members to feature in this series:

  • Mark researches the genetics underlying resistance breakthroughs in soil-borne pathogens: plant-parasitic nematodes. Resistance break-through is a slow process taking decades, but the tell-tale signs can be detected early. He works with a broad team including wet-lab biologists as well as bioinformaticians.

  • As a multi-species cardiogenomicist, Frank sees a unique opportunity to improve translational discoveries through the use of companion animal models from veterinary genetics. The complexity of unresolved genetic diseases requires novel translational approaches. Developments in sequencing and molecular techniques have greatly enhanced variant discovery, but making sense of the cause-effect relationship for novel variants remains extremely challenging.
